Welcome to the world of the film “Tonbi.” Let’s walk through the filming locations at the Otani district, Konko town, Asakuchi city.
The whole town artistically decorated for the large-scale shooting to recreate the lively atmosphere of the Showa era shopping street. The nostalgic townscape highly praised by the Film Director, the Producer and the Art Decorating Staff as “a town where people live their daily lives in a good old townscape” used as the filming location for shopping district of “Bigo city,” where the main character Yasu resided. Because actual functioning stores appeared as part of the set, the atmosphere created in the film still remains. This article introduces, places to see, foods to enjoy and souvenir to bring back when you walk the filming location.
Otani Mikage Square
Otani Mikage Square now takes the position as the base for revitalizing this temple town. Café space to try out something new and various types of events held here. Shops such as the “UNITED CAFÉ” with its baked goods, “cocotime” with fruits sandwiches, “our coffee” with coffee and cakes, shops rotate daily.

Furukawa Sake-ten Shop
“The shooting took place right in front of the shop,” the shop owner explained. Furukawa Sake-ten (sake Shop) now deeply rooted in the area, started operation as a Shinki-ten (store specializing in articles used in Shinto rituals) for the Konkokyo religion in the Meiji era. Elegant exterior and the storefront appeared repeatedly in the movie. Along with Okayama’s local sake, wine and original shochu (Japanese barley distilled spirit), all three types of Konkokyo Omiki (Konkokyo religion sake offering) are available, the sweet tasting “Sinro,” elegant tasting “Tenchi No Shizuku,” and the dry tasting “Kashin.”
You will see Impressive woodcraft ornaments in the shop. Ornaments created by the shop owner Mr. Shigeru Furukawa. The art decoration staff took notice of these woodcrafts and two ornaments seen in the picture actually appeared in the film. The eggplant and the frog both displayed on the counter of the eatery “Yunagi” and the Buddha statue appeared in the scene where the Buddhist priest, Kaiun, writes a letter to Akira at “Yakushiin.” Please try finding it while you watch the film.

Tsuchiya Shokudo Diner
This is a diner founded in 1950, where the staff involved in the film also frequented. Out of 40 items in the menu, the one that stands out is the “Katsudon (700 yen).” Katsudon, a pork cutlet on a rice bowl is usually prepared with eggs, but here egg yolk tops the clear starchy sauce. The chicken broth thickened with starch is rich in flavor, but also give a light taste to the deep-fried pork. Breaking the egg yolk adds to the flavor. This original menu inspired by a menu of the famous pub “Stand “in Kyoto. This creation comes with a story, the first owner, who learned to cook at the “Stand” try to recreate the dish with a vague memory.
Other recommended menus, pork cutlet with homemade demi-glace sauce, the omelet rice a classic dish, ramen with homemade noodles, hearty set meals and more. The No.1 popular dish is the vegetable champon noodles \700 is must to eat.

Ogawa-ya Japanese Sweet Shop
This shop is located at the center of the shopping district, founded in 15th year of Showa era. The Konko Manju’s (sweet bun with red bean paste filling), is made with plenty of local eggs and 100% Hokkaido red bean paste filling. The batter flavored with honey and the delicate bean paste filling melts in your mouth.
Konko manju from Ogawaya shop has the named “Yuzaki manju”. The name derives from the hill behind the Konko-kyo headquarters, the Yuzaki yama (Yuzaki mountain). New Years and twice a year during the Konko-kyo Daisai (religious event), a white bean paste version is released. No dairy products and filling are used for making the Yatsunami Castella (Japanese yellow sponge cake), you can enjoy the simple flavor of honey used in the batter. 1 for 108 yen, 6 for 770 yen (box), and 10 for 1,250 yen (box).

Kinetsu-do Ekinan-ten Japanese Sweet Shop
On the south side of the JR Konko station, along the Satomi-gawa river stands a Konko manju shop, a shop with a long history. This shop’s Mikage Manju, loved by the worshippers of the Konko-kyo for 120 years since the shop was founded in the Meiji era. This Mikage manju has moist texture like a castella sponge cake and plenty of sweet and smooth Hokkaido red bean paste filling. Many fans praise the manju, “this cannot be substituted by another.” Recommended, freshly baked or rested for 3 days, where you can enjoy the combination of bun and filling blending in together, 1 for 80 yen.
Enjoy the gentle flavor of the additive-free rice cracker “Goshinkun Senbei” with the words of Goshinkun (Konko-kyo scripture). Another popular item is the “Peanuts Senbei” with infrared roasted peanuts.

Bichu-do Japanese Sweet Shop
“Bichu-do,” is just off of the main shopping street to the east. Bichu-do is known for been particular about ingredients used for making the batter, such as eggs from Tamashima and flour from Kojima. The round shaped confectionery is unique to this store. Seasonal products are available during the New Year’s Holidays. Koshian (smooth bean paste) is sold at 70 yen and others for 90 yen each. *Sold in a set of two. Ten in each box
The Mikage manju at this shop is hand-baked traditional style. On lucky days, you can see the process of hand baking through the window.
"The new product introduced on the new year of 2022, has a chewy texture that can get you hooked. Filling choices are, smooth red bean paste, custard cream, chocolate cream. These western style fillings are popular amongst the children. 1 for 100 yen.

Fujii Shoten Store
A locally connected store established in the 16th year of the Meiji era. In the film, this store appears at the opening scene where Yasu hurriedly appears on his three-wheeler vehicle to deliver a package. The store carries fruits and vegetables, sweets, beverages, and cooking seasonings.
Even today, scales and abacus are active tools in this store. The store ambience is just like the period created in the film “Tonbi,” it is as though one has traveled back in time.

Bodaiju no mi Café
A café located at the entrance of a shopping arcade leading to the main gate of Konko-kyo headquarters. Handmade sweets made at The Special Needs Community Activity Support Center are popular amongst the locals and the worshippers. 6 flavors of Madeleines, including, Kumquat, pumpkin, black sesame seeds, roasted sweet potato each sold at 110 yen. Lemon cakes made with finely chopped lemon zest (700 yen per bar), natural and simple flavored oatmeal cookies (130 yen), and marmalade using homegrown citrus are also sold at the store. A store where you can casually drop by while on your walk through the town.

Tosa-ya Ryokan Japanese Inn
Established in the Edo era (Bunsei 10th year) in a port town Tamashima as a Japanese inn. During the Meiji era, inn relocated from Tamashima to Konko. The inn with 200 years of history, the current owner being the sixth generation. It is within a walking distance from the Otani shopping street. The inside of the facility is comfortable but also gives off the feeling of nostalgia and has a very cozy atmosphere.
