Kumayama Ruins

Japan, Oku, Akaiwa City, Okayama Prefecture, 709-0713

33 stone masonry remains located in southern Okayama Prefecture In the area around Mt. Kumayama, the highest peak in southern Okayama Prefecture at an altitude of 508.6m, there are 33 stone structures, the largest of which is the nationally designated historic site "Kumayama Site." This unique stone structure, reminiscent of a pyramid, consists of three tiers, and a square vertical shaft is provided in the Chuo of the top of the third tier, where a ceramic cylindrical container and a Nara sansai small jar were placed. Similar structures to the stone structure at the Kumayama Site are the Zutō (head stupa) of Nara Prefecture Prefecture and the Dotō (earthen stupa) of Osaka Prefecture, and based on the presence of unearthed artifacts, it is thought that these are Buddhist stupas from the Nara period, similar to the Zutō and Dotō.
