This is the first Japanese private art museum. It was established in 1930 by Magosaburo Ohara, a business person based in Kurashiki who took an active role as a tycoon in industry and who was aiming to collect arts mainly from western countries, as well as to honor the memory of Torajiro Kojima, an artist passed away a year before the establishment of this museum.
